Wheat & Corn Short Term Storage Steel Silos
In this project, the client requested us to design several hopper steel silos used for short term storage of wheat and corn to meet the high turnover. Short term means the grains will be stored in the steel silos within serveral months. Choosing to use steel silo storage, it is much more cost effectively & quality control.
Main Features
1. Control Moisture Content: Before storing corn and wheat, the moisture content must be controlled. If the moisture content is too high, it is prone to heating and mold growth. Steel silos can be equipped with drying systems to prevent the grains from drying out excessively and losing their edible or seed value by controlling the temperature.
2. Ensure a Dry & Well-ventilated Storage Environment: The silos are equipped with ventilation and temperature & humidity monitoring systems. Regular ventilation is necessary during storage to reduce humidity and temperature, especially after rainy weather. Real-time monitoring of stored corn and wheat ensures quality control during storage.
3. Clean up Impurities: The silos are equipped with pre-cleaning and dust removal systems to remove impurities such as broken grains, straw, and soil from the grains before they are stored. Impurities can absorb moisture, clog ventilation gaps, and increase the risk of mold. Cleaning can be done through methods such as sieving and air separation to ensure that the corn purity reaches over 95%.
4. Strengthen Temperature & Humidity Monitoring: Regularly check the temperature and humidity inside the grain silo, using a thermometer to measure the temperature at different depths (surface, middle, and bottom). When the grain temperature exceeds 30°C, timely ventilation and cooling are necessary. Simultaneously monitor the humidity inside the silo, maintaining a relative humidity below 65%. Temperature and humidity can be regulated by installing ventilation equipment (such as axial flow fans or centrifugal fans). During the high temperatures of summer, utilize the lower temperatures at night for ventilation and cooling. During the rainy season, strengthen moisture-proofing measures, such as placing desiccants and using dehumidifiers.
5. Avoid Mixing: Grains of different varieties, moisture contents, and grades should be stored separately to prevent cross-contamination and quality degradation. During storage, avoid mixing with odorous, toxic, or corrosive substances, and maintain a clean and hygienic storage environment.
6. First-in & First-out: Short-term storage generally refers to less than 3 months. The storage period should be shortened as much as possible. Grains with longer storage time should be given priority. The "first-in, first-out" principle should be followed to reduce the quality deterioration of grains during storage.
